Tandoor gets facelift
For longstanding fans of Tandoor Indian Restaurant, 1301 E. Franklin St., visiting the restaurant now feels akin to Dorothy when she left Kansas and landed in Oz. The moment you descend the stairs, you're surrounded by flowing fabrics in pinks, amethyst, orange, plum and copper colors. Following the aroma of classic Indian spices you arrive at a completely refurbished place, filled with mythological art and sculpture, newly painted doorways, metal bird sculptures and butterfly topiaries as well as new booths, rugs, curtains, covers and cushions. Local designer Terry Melville worked with owner Balwinder "Binda" Bhupal to revitalize his 10-year-old restaurant into a place that families, visitors, students and business travelers would feel welcome and joyful in. Tandoor is located near Whitehall Antiques next to State Farm Insurance and serves buffet lunches and full-menu dinners with wine and beer. 967-6622.

NOW SERVING
Getting our curry (and halal) bases covered
7 OCT 2009 by Victoria Bouloubasis

With the distinct scent of cardamom and ginger wafting through the air, Tandoor Indian Restaurant in Chapel Hill (1301 E. Franklin St., 967-6622, www.tandoorindian.com) has always greeted customers with a homey embrace. A reincarnation of this local favorite includes a new, even more inviting atmosphere. The redecorated space is filled with vibrant colors inspired by owner Binda Bhupal's homeland: mango orange, Kashmiri hot pink, Bombay yellow, peacock blue. The same traditional Punjabi menu items are accented by a new selection of tandoori specialties, including salmon cooked in the clay oven. And a new Bollywood Thaji is a house specialty, a silver platter with an assortment of dishes to try, accompanied by Bollywood movie screenings on Wednesday nights. There's also a new children's menu, with mild curry for beginners and tandoori chicken tenders.
